Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo was born in Mayorga, Spain in 1538. He was named after a local fifth-century bishop and saint and as a child, he had a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He prayed to her daily and fasted every Saturday in her honor.
He first studied in the humanities and law before serving as a professor and later as the Grand Inquisitor at the behest of King Philip II. He was appointed Archbishop of Lima by Pope Gregory XIII in 1579. Turibius traveled throughout his diocese, often on foot and frequently alone, visiting and confirming thousands of people. He also worked tirelessly for social justice, especially for the indigenous peoples.
He was known for his humility, his love for the poor, and his zeal for evangelization. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726.
